Naked & Famous Denim x MOMOTARO Jeans

I quite like the Montreal denim label Naked & Famous, and I was interested when I read about Momotaro jeans a few months ago.  Naked & Famous are known for their use of selvedge denim, and Momotaro are known and respected for their ultra-traditional methods of producing their denim fabric and jeans.  Momotaro uses an original hand shuttle loom to produce their denim, and then manufactures the jeans with a union special chain stitch.  N&F and Momotaro recently collaborated on a new denim line.

From the N&F site:

Introducing… our first ever co-branded collaborative jean! We knocked heads with the fine folks at Momotaro (one of our favorite cult denim brands from Kojima) and came up with a superbly crafted Canada X Japan double-name collabo. Details…

– 14.5oz Pure Indigo Rope-Dyed Japanese Selvedge Denim
– Produced on vintage USA machinery, including the famous Union Special 43200G bulldog chain-stitching machine.
– Momotaro branded Iron Buttons + Copper Rivets
– Hidden back pocket rivets with “peach/shuttle” logo
– Trademark Momotaro Pink “peach” inseam thread
– Double-name deerskin leather patch
– Japanese rising sun + Canadian maple leaf logos printed in red on pocket bags

Oh, and apparently Momotaro jeans usually go for about $1300 CAD in Japan, so not sure how much the N&F colab ones will go for.

Top 10 G-STAR Fall/Winter 2010 Jackets

This weekend, I came across a store in our local mall called KOVA that carries G-Star RAW jackets.   I don’t know of anywhere else in town that stocks G-Star, so this was a good find.  With the Boxing day sales going on (and for you non-commonwealth folk the “day after Christmas” sales) I might go down and pick up a coat for myself.  I decided to take a look at the rest of the Fall/Winter 2010 collection from G-Star and share them with you.  Here are my top 10 picks from their lineup (all photo’s care of G-STAR)

See the rest of the Fall/Winter 2010 collection at G-STAR’s online store.

These looks are all from the Autumn/Winter 2010 denim collection.  Apparently this model only has one pose, or there was a strong wind the day of the photo shoot…leanin’ like a tree in the breeze….  anyways…enjoy the jeans.

CUSP FALL FASHION SHOOT 2010

CUSP

-Noun

– a point that marks the beginning of a change: on the cusp of a new era.

I want to talk about two women that I admire for their style, entrepreneurial spirit and their stake in the Victoria fashion scene.  I am referring to Alyssa and Nicole, better known as the ladies behind the local house of fashion: CUSP.   This month, their Fall collection has been captured by the darling of Lucky Bar, photographer Antonio LaFauci.

This post is the Style Butcher’s first expose of a local boutique, and I am thrilled  that CUSP has allowed us to showcase their Fall 2010 collection.

So, lets talk about the clothes.

It’s all good stuff. I should know:

When CUSP carried mens wear, I picked up a pair of Adriano Goldshmeid jeans, and have loved them to death.  Any time my wife passes through the store, there is always something that she wants to add to her closet…I’m sure a few more pieces will end up in her possession by Christmas.

For 2010, CUSP is strictly carrying women’s wear, and I am a huge fan of their LAMB by Gwen Stefani line, Adriano Goldshmeid Jeans and Supertrash styles, not to mention one of my all-time favorite labels – Miss Sixty.  If you choose from any of these lines, you really can’t go wrong.

photos c/o Antonio Lafauci

One of the things that I think CUSP needs more recognition for is it’s offering of ridiculously slick footwear.  We are talking quality over quantity here – this is not Shoe Warehouse with hundreds of styles you don’t want, though I must say that for a small boutique, the range of footwear they stock is impressive. I think both of the girls must have a shoe fetish, and a good eye, because there are more than a few gems to be found on their shelves – maybe a pair of Miss Sixty heels or Dolce Vita boots.

CUSP also carries handcrafted, one-of-a-kind jewelry and hot handbags such as those from Christopher Kon.

Now, lets talk a bit about the CUSP Fall 2010 Fashion Shoot.  Shot in downtown Victoria,  I think that between the models Laurel, Jessica, Melanie and Janelle, Cusp’s clothing and Antonio LaFauci’s photography style,  they have truly captured the essence of sexy west coast street-wear.   The ladies worked it, and I think that Antonio always finds the best in people with his camera.  Simply fantastic on all accounts. Enjoy!

Model: Jessica, Dress: LAMB Lace Cocktail Dress, shoes: Miss Sixty Brigitta”

Model: Melanie, Blazer: Supertrash “Julia” Jacket, Jeggins: Supertrash “Peppy”, Boots: Dolce Vita “Bronson”

CUSP is always a welcoming place to peruse new styles and the girls are always happy to help find that perfect piece. They are open seven days a week, and are always ready to hook you up.  Visit CUSP on Facebook for updates on the store and Antonio LaFauci’s site for more great photography!

Sweet Boots Identified

So, I posted yesterday that I was on the hunt for a pair of sweet boots, and I found a pair today that I think I will most likely acquire.  The are from the Selected/Homme collection by Jack & Jones.  All leather and with the exact smooth cap toe that I was looking for, kind of like a stylish army boot.  I found them at Flavour on Johnson St in Victoria, BC.   They were pretty well priced for a full leather boot.  (Note: I don’t mind sharing where I found them, I already put a pair on hold….not going to repeat last time when I came back two days later and they were all sold out. )  Anyways, I like em a lot, maybe you will too.

Kicking Ass and Taking Names

I think I’m growing out of skate shoes.  I still wear them for BMXing and when I need something easy and casual, but I think it’s time I expanded my footwear horizons.  I found a great pair of boots from the Abington collection by Timberland at a local store called Still Life. Unfortunately, it seems that a lot of other people thought that these boots were pretty sweet, because when I came back three days later they were already sold out.  And back-ordered. And sold out in every other store in Victoria.  So, I’ve gone on a bit of a hunt to find a good substitute.

Timberland Abington 5" Boot

Apparently these were the boots to have this winter. Maybe the internet will provide me a pair.

Abington By Timberland

Another option from Timberland.  There were waaaaay more pairs of this boot than the ones I was looking for, and by way more I mean one pair, in a size 6.  I mean, that is like 100% more boots available than the other one, right?  But, I haven’t worn a size six since grade 6.

One more option from the Timberland Abington collection. not really my style, but still kind of cool.

Moving on to something a little different – these are the All Star Storm Boot “Woolrich” from Converse. I actually found these at a mall store, a place called Town Shoes in the Mayfair shopping centre in Victoria, BC.  I’ve never worn Converse before, but these boots/shoes are pretty rad. They have two layers, and you can unzip and fold down the outside layer as seen here:

Finally, I found two other boot styles that I came across on the GQ style site. These are kind of rocking the vintage, worn out look, and I dig it.  Both of the following photos were taken by Gordon Von Steiner for GQ.

So, goodbye skate shoes, hello shit kickers.

Cheers!

Keeping Busy – Search & Rescue Clothing

Been working on some jeans designs, and working on some even bigger plans. Wish I could elaborate, but that will come in time. Cryptic, no?
Anyways, here are a few sketches of some women’s denim cuts I’ve been working on.  I will have a sample of each style finished soon.

And if it wasn’t obvious enough, my denim line is going to be called Search & Rescue.

Diesel Black Gold and Monarchy Spring 2010

I am a fan of both of these labels, but for this post, I will let the clothes speak for themselves. Yes, that sounds lazy, but I’ve been drinking beer and Baileys (not together), so I don’t think anything intelligent is going to come out of me anyways…
so, heeeeeeeere are the runway shows…

I am not a model

So, I haven’t posted in the last few days because I’ve had the flu, and then when I was feeling better, I started a sewing project that I spent the last two days on. I made myself a pair of jeans, and they turned out quite well. For the pattern, I took an old pair of jeans and deconstructed them to then transfer to a base pattern, and then adjusted the cut for the fit and styling. I had some nice dark stretch denim, and ended up with a rad pair of totally wearable jeans. On the next pair I make, I will go further with the detailing and finishing, but for my first attempt at a pair of men’s jeans, I’m really happy with the finished product. I took a few pictures of the finished pants, and got my wife to take a couple of me wearing them, which then led me to realize that, holy shit, I’ve gotten fat, I am not a model, and it is a damn good thing that I just got my gym pass back. Time to get heroin chic!

Next up, a pair of dark and sexy women’s skinny jeans and maybe a bolero leather jacket.

Work Custom Jeans

In my last post, I reviewed a collection that I had high hopes for, but unfortunately found quite disappointing.  Thankfully, I have come across another up and coming brand that has a collection that is small in size, but big in style.  Work Custom Jeans only produces women’s styles, so though I will never be able to wear their line (unless they start doing men’s) I am very fond of their cuts, colours and styling. And not just the styling of the garments themselves; all too often a great pair of jeans is ruined by poor model styling, but in this case, the finishing of the model’s look is just as interesting as the clothing itself (unlike in the Citizens of Humanity Holiday 2010 campaign, where I really can’t understand some of their shoe and accessory choices).

Citizens of Humanity?

I thought I would check out the latest collection from Citizens of Humanity, as they are getting a lot of hype lately.  It’s funny, after viewing their collection, I have completely polar opposite feelings for their garments. Some of their jackets are really edgy and wearable and some of their jeans, like the women’s skinny are super sexy, fit well and I absolutely love.  On the contrary, many of their cuts make me think mom-jean more than luxury denim.  Maybe I’m just really not into the boyfriend cut…

Anyways, have a look, let me know what you think – maybe I’m totally off base, but when I see a new line, I want something exciting! Maybe with this collection exciting wasn’t the point? But then what was?

Taking it from the street

I’ve wanted to do a post on Banksy for a while. There is a lot of graffiti out there that is just vandalism, and then there is the street art that makes the world around us more interesting.  Most of Banksy’s work makes some sort of statement about the society he lives in, and some of his pieces are pretty god-damn adventurous – such as the pieces on the wall around the Gaza strip.  Some of his street “sculptures” are quite provocative  as well.  One of the things that I appreciate about Banksy is his view is that art is for everyone, and owned by no one – he openly suggest that people take art from his website, as long as they give credit where it is due. So, here is a selection of Banksy‘s work:

The Brooklyn Circus

Today I found a sick new label called The Brooklyn Circus based right in Brooklyn, New York that sells all of the essential items needed for extremely fresh  NYC styz.  From boots to bags to bomber jackets, I would love to acquire any of their wares.  They have now opened up a shop in San Francisco, and I think my wife and I may have to go on a mission to find this store.

Pants I enjoy wearing – Adriano Goldschmied Fall 2010

Lets talk about pants. Sexy pants. Jeans to be exact.  There have been a few pairs of jeans that I have acquired that I loved so much that I wore them until the holes became inappropriate and embarrassing to those around me. There have  been a few pairs of Robin’s Jeans, some old and trusty Levis, and now a pair of Adriano G’s that are the most comfortable pair of jeans I have ever owned, and am currently beating the shit out of.  I am not a skinny hipster, and therefor could not pull on a pair of Cheap Monday’s or another pair of jeans made for people that live on vodka and cigarettes.  I need jeans that fit right on a full figured man – a man that prefers whiskey and cake.  What I’m saying is that AG jeans are god damn comfortable, fit perfectly, break in amazingly well,  and look fucking good.  I bought these pants at Cusp on Johnson St, and I cry a  little bit inside when I think about the fact that they only sell women’s clothes now and I have no idea where to get my next pair of AG jeans.  Ok, I don’t cry inside, cuz I’m not a little bitch, but I would like to find another pair of these kick ass pants. Anyways…

In their own words – here is a bit about the company from their site:

The AG Adriano Goldschmied brand, founded in 2000, partnered long-time denim guru, Adriano Goldschmied, and the industry leader in quality and innovative jean manufacturing, Yul Ku, of Koos Manufacturing in South gate CA.
Starting out as a small boutique line the first couple of years, AG has since become synonymous with great quality, design and state-of-the-art washes.
In the fall of 2004, Adriano and Mr. Ku mutually decided to end their association, with Adriano leaving his namesake company to venture out on his own. Under the direction of Mr. Ku, the AG team has maintained its commitment to the made in the USA label, and is dedicated to the continued development of the brand with the utmost attention to detail and quality.
The ultimate goal for any denim brand is to create jeans with genuine vintage appeal, while maintaining a modern silhouette and authentic washes.
“AG-ed Vintage” utilizes a revolutionary laundry technique, producing jeans that truly mimic vintage jeans that have been worn for years.
Today, AG Adriano Goldschmied continues to grow with the addition of retail stores, and an expansion of new distribution networks throughout Canada, Asia and Europe.

Good Stuff.  And now, the Fall 2010 Lineup:

Fashion Find

We were having drinks at Havana on Commercial Drive in Vancouver, and our server was very well put together, and quite happy to let us have a photo to share.  It’s hard to tell from the iphone photo, but her top is sequined and rad and was complimented by her lucite necklace.  Havana has an art gallery in the back of the restaurant, where we took the photo. …Sorry for the grainy shot, but I didn’t have my camera on me.

Street Etiquette

Street Etiquette is the blog of two of New York’s finest attired young men.  Joshua Kissi and Travis Gumbs are the creators of this fashion chronicle that has received accolades such as  “Mens Best Style Blog”from The Guardian to being selected  as one of the “40 Bloggers Who Really Count” by the London Times.  Basically you have two guys with mad style who pull their fashion influences from eras gone by, and show the world that urban doesn’t have to mean ball caps and baggy jeans. Think GQ meets Mad Men meets Gen Y hipster. I’m down, and I think you will be too.  Well documented and sharply dressed, these two gentlemen are going to be under an ever-growing spotlight, and I don’t think they mind at all.

A throw back to 2008

Thought I would post some shots from a fashion show that I put on for local boutiques and designers back in summer of 2008. Some of the styles are a bit out of date now, but it’s still nice to have a look back on some of the previous trends.
